The Rise of Ryan Fredericks
He seems to have cemented the starting RB position. Is he our long-term solution or just a stop-gap?

Re: The Rise of Ryan Fredericks
He was horrific today. He’s only playing so we don’t trigger Zabaleta’s extension.

Need to be doing much better than Fredericks if we are to progress

I thought he was terrible yesterday.

Can’t believe he gets in in front of Zab.

Understood Zabaleta has a problem with his back at the moment.
Is their a new contract trigger based on certain number of appearances?

Re: The Rise of Ryan Fredericks
I'm looking forward to seeing a bit more of Ben Johnson who looks like a conventional right-back.

Fredericks made his name as a wing-back in a Fulham team that was very open even for Championship level.

However, that formation yesterday and the over-reliance of lightweight but creative players didn't help him or anybody else really.

Antonio and the sulky one should have started yesterday

Can't just blame Fredricks the whole lot of them were shit. (maybe Fab excepted)

Sven, yes, well spotted you rascal.

Re: The Rise of Ryan Fredericks
Said it from day one, he is a bloody wing back, never a full back and a qusetionable at that

Quick, direct and game but positionally weak and a defensive liability

He will never change

Fucking hell

He has been excellent in a few games leading up to yesterday, we already forgetting about that? He didn't have a great day yesterday, but the whole team was shit.

Re: The Rise of Ryan Fredericks
For a full back to have the pace he does in the modern game is a real asset, although you still have to be able to play football of course. Jury still out for me, needs a real run at it now.

You have a point

I suspect it was the 4-1-4-1 formation and lightweight starting line-up which mugged off the fullbacks yesterday.

Re: The Rise of Ryan Fredericks
It's ridiculous, one minute he's going to be our right back for the next 5 year, the next game he doesn't know what a football is.

For me, if budget allows it, an upgrade would be nice, but I think we've got bigger problems in the team than him. We need a left back as a priority, a centre midfielder, and 2 strikers. Hopefully there's money left after that to upgrade on Fredericks, but I doubt it.

Re: The Rise of Ryan Fredericks
He has not shown us he is great (like was being said after the couple game before this) or rubbish (like people are saying here)

You can't teach pace, which he has, so that is a great place from whence to work.

He needs better decision making and skills when he gets into their final third. Something required for a Pellegrini fullback.

Hoilett had a great game yesterday. (There are obvious reasons I watch him closely. To preempt all the unoriginal comments: he is one of the best player on my national team - pathetic I know - but I did not choose West Ham or Canada to support) However, the ball was coming back to him repeated because we did nothing with it. Fredericks was caught between try to be up getting us a goal and dealing with a player having a good outing (they are not that common for him.)

Time will tell again.

Re: The Rise of Ryan Fredericks
I guess the overall point is, when have the rest of this season to decided before we can make a decision on whether we need to address the position.

ironsofcanada 12:27 Sun Mar 10

The problem was the wide attacking players were not tracking back and helping the full backs so they didn't know whether to stick or twist...

As you say Hoilett was able to exploit the space inbetween

Crassus 12:33 Sun Mar 10
Re: The Rise of Ryan Fredericks
Pace he does have but positionally, as you inadvertantly recognise Irons, and his defensive qualitities are not so easily trained, lad looks like an athlete rather than a footballer

That said, I agree with ED, not at the top of the priorities for change so will likely be around for a while. I did like the early look at young Ben, now he really does look the part
